IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN THE UK 2 Introduction The internet is mostly used to search for information. The internet is however used for connecting with other people for businesses purposes and making new friends. The recent means of communication used by students brought by the new technology is social media. It employs social networking sites such as facebook, twitter and whatsApp which connect people all the world ( Woods and Scott, 2016, p.42) . Social media has made it simple for students to communicate with each other irrespective of the distance as they are availed at a wide array of applications. The wide range of applications ensures that everyone is connected through social media. Social media have a positive impact on university students when used in a meaningful manner as it improves their academic performance although it creates more problems due to addiction and when used abnormally. Literature Review Many studies have been performed to find out the impacts of social media on students. Social media may affect the performance of students either positively or negatively. Social media has the benefit of enabling students to deal with academic frustrations. Students use social media to share ideas with others suffering from the same problem which relieves them from the frustration they may be suffering. Students also use social media to discuss class issues ( Al- Rahmi and Zeki, 2017, p.528) . Many students have reported the positive impact of social media to their studies. Social media benefits students only when used in a meaningful manner. Studies have found that many students who spent most of their time on social media have good results in their academics since they benefit from the exchange of ideas with other students undertaking the same course. According to Chugh and Ruhi, university students also use social media platforms

Students should be educated on how to use social media positively purposely for improving their performance but not in an abnormal way. Despite social media being helpful to students in boosting their performance, many students have been affected by social media addiction. Social media affects the lives of university students to the extent of lowering their performance ( Lau, 2017, p.286) . Social media is very attractive since university students are given an opportunity of making new friends and releasing pressure. Through networking, university students get a wide range of information.
