Stemming from last week’s discussion around different paradigms, Robert Blauner’s model of internal colonialism was a unifying force that really formed the basis for Third World solidarity and social movements in the 1960s. It is clear from the readings that the Asian American Movement was a result of people unifying across both ethnic and racial boundaries. In reclaiming the largely negative term “Oriental”, Yuji Ichioka coined the term “Asian American” which captured “the Pan-Asian concept, originally imposed by non-Asians, [and] became a symbol of pride and a rallying point for mass mobilization by later generations” (Dhingra & Rodriguez, 198).
