Sunday Play Streets – Chinese American History Day 1. Main Point of Trip On September 1, 2019, I attended one of the Sunday Play Streets at Waverly Place in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The main objective of this event was to educate the community and general public on Chinese American history in the Bay Area, specifically in the Sunset District. This was presented in a series of eleven panels—each detailing a different aspect of the Chinese American journey to the Sunset District, within it, and beyond it. Visitors could walk along and read about different time periods and facets of Chinese American history in the Sunset District and broader San Francisco community. These panels started in the 1850s then covered the 1940s onward in more depth, discussing the First and Second Waves of immigration, racism and segregation, Chinese American identity, language, and community leadership in the Sunset, among other topics. 2. Audience Make-Up and Response The audience primarily consisted of both part- and full-Chinese, Chinese American, and Asian American people. There were a number of non-Asian people scattered throughout the crowd, most notably a few Caucasian and Hispanic people and some tourists passing by. The age of attendees likely
