1 Study Guide -- Audio Lecture on Norms Introduction to Sociology Online (Note: This audio lecture is approximately 8 minutes long.) Know what norms are. Know what folkways are. Know what mores are. (Folkways and mores are specific types of norms.) Norms – shared rules or guidelines that define how people are suppose to behave in particular circumstances Folkways – norms for a routine or casual interaction; ex. Manner of dress or greetings, common courtesy; ‘saying thank you when you receive a gift’ or ‘saying hello when you are greeted’; where clothes that are neat and groomed, not smelly and falling apart Mores – widely observed in society and are morally significant; don’t have sex with kids, con people out of their life savings, murder, arson – people are morally outraged; response is severe – call police or mental hospital to deal with the person. In modern society Mores are almost always formalized into law with specific punishments attached.
