Required reading material will be posted to Canvas. Course Overview: BUS 217W will help you develop essential critical thinking and business communication skills needed for you to succeed in today’s global economy. You will have an opportunity to apply models for critical thinking and business communication to business case scenarios, building your skills to identify, assess, and report on conflicting perspectives regarding current business topics. Applying critical thinking to persuasive business communication, you will improve your ability to make reasoned, credible, well-organized arguments to support your ideas. As this is a “W” course, emphasis will also be on developing your ability to demonstrate your critical thinking skills through your business writing. This course is unique in that the dual objectives of developing critical thinking and business communication skills are accomplished through a partnership between the Beedie School of Business and the Centre for English Language Teaching and Learning (CELLTR). You will engage with faculty from both areas in class and during office hours. You are expected to attend all lectures, as part of the class time you will be working on exercises and assignments individually and in groups. The general format of the classes will be: 1) Lecture based upon a weekly topic for critical thinking in business 2) Class discussion of events in business or a business case example. Students are expected to participate in class discussions.

2 3) Review of business language elements related to a weekly topic, and/or strengthening of business written communication skills based on needs identified in written assignments. Course Objectives: By actively participating in BUS 217W, you will be able to do the following: Demonstrate critical thinking at an introductory level. Analyze a business situation and develop alternatives. Understand and apply best practices for clarity in business communication. Identify and assess conflicting perspectives. Promote and support recommendations based on sound reasoning and evidence. Analyze the role of language when thinking critically in a business context. Highlight and use key vocabulary and grammatical structures that support effective business communication.
