BASIC NOTES ON IDEOLOGIES 1. Realism – IR is the relations of states engaged in pursuit of power. The system is anarchic, there is no common or higher power, and conflict is endemic. Its roots are in Thucydides and Hobbes. Remember Morganthau’s 6 principles: a. IR is governed by laws that have their roots in human nature (competition and the desire for self-preservation) b. States have interests, the primary of which is to maximize power (competition is a zero-sum game, survival is primary) c. The interests of the state are permanent (security comes first – then civil society and domestic needs can be addressed) d. States are the only actors in IR (they are sovereign) e. There is no universal code of ethics or morality (no objective morality) f. Politics is autonomous – it has its own rules and principles that are different from ethics and morality (meaning, God is not on your side) 2. Neorealism (structural realism) – Accepts the central tenets of realism except they do not accept it is a result of human nature. Instead, the result of anarchy. States must
