Assignment #8 1. Who approved the building of the Love Canal school and neighborhood on the toxic waste dump site left by Hooker Chemical? The city of Niagra Falls approved the building of the Love Canal school and neighborhood on the toxic dump site by Hooker Chemical. The Hooker Chemical Company sold the land to the Niagra Falls School Board. Even after the chemical company warned the board of the potential toxicity of the property, the city still continued to build the school and neighborhood on the area. The cracks forming in the clay barrier caused minor explosions, the release of chemical odors, and the seeping of black sludge into basements and yards. They also caused high rates of birth defects, miscarriages, and a series of illnesses within the population (Kleiman). 2. How SPECIFICALLY could the Love Canal situation been avoided? The Love Canal situation could have been avoided if the Hooker Chemical Company and the government did not dump chemical waste into the area. They should have considered the future effects of such actions and properly disposed of the chemical wastes. The unfortunate events concerning the population could have been avoided if the city refused to build a school and neighborhood on the property. If the city of Niagra Falls took the deal seriously and took account of the potential dangers of building such things on the property, the people would not have experienced such health issues and risks.
