Muir’s viewpoint on nature is that forests should be preserved and should be forbidden from industrial uses. What work event caused Muir to put a higher value on nature and the outdoors? When he almost lost an eye to due to an industrial accident, he vacated his mechanical career and indulged himself to nature and the outdoors. What Environmental Organization did Muir create? What does that organization do and why is it important? Muir created the Sierra Club. This environmental organization devotes time in protecting and preserving the environment; this is important so that future generations are able to enjoy and explore the earth as well. What area of land did Muir and Pinchot battle over in the early 1900’s? Muir and Pinchot fought over Sequoia and Yosemite national parks. Why was the Tuolumne River damned? The Tuolumne River was damned to help irrigate the rich agriculture regions and to generate electricity. From an environmental standpoint, what is Muir’s legacy? (Hint: Check the PowerPoint presentation this week) Muir’s legacy was that he was able to help preserve national parks in order to protect endangered plants and animals and the ecosystems within those areas. 2. Gifford Pinchot How did Pinchot’s view of nature differ from Muir's? Pinchot’s viewpoint on nature was that he encouraged the use of resources in a sustainable matter within forests. When Muir and Pinchot disagreed on Hetch Hetchy in the early 1900’s who had to settle their differences? What was the decision?
