Strategy is an extensive notion with a history that can be attributed to by various concepts, with this essay focusing on that of the military and neoliberalism and which has a more profound effect on it. Through further research and analysis of numerous scholarly articles, this essay determines that neoliberalism has had a greater effect on strategy and strategic management as opposed to the military. The first part of this essay focuses on neoliberalism as an economic ideology focusing on transitioning from the public sector to the private sector with references from Mintzberg, Knights and Morgan and Davies. The second part of this essay analyses the impact on military has had on strategy while still reinforcing the greater impact of neoliberalism which is further extended upon by Porter, and Villanueva. The third part of this essay focuses on the power and history that neoliberalism has placed upon strategic management with input from Bockman, Friedman and Sewpaul. Strategy as a concept is widely defined and discussed among notable scholars, where it has been stated that “all strategies are abstractions which exist only in the minds of interested parties” (Mintzberg, 1987). Two particular factors that have been widely discussed as attributing factors to strategy and strategic management is that of neoliberalism and the military, with neoliberalism having a greater effect, particularly because “the twentieth century has seen contradictory developments in military strategy” (Knights and Morgan, 1990). Neoliberalism is an economic ideology that refers to the transfer of control from the public sector to the private sector and highlights the significance of free market competition.
