Last Name 1 Name Professor Course Date Distinction of Divine Law and Human Law Introduction According to Thomas Aquinas, law is described as the rule and measure of acts that a man is expected to follow in one’s actions which work by inducing acceptable behavior and restraining deviant behavior. That being said, he also outlined that since rules and measures of acts are reason, law is a product of reason and this reason is categorized under human reason or divine reason. For these reasons, different forms of law emerge, namely, divine law and human law. However, it is worth noting that while these are the main categories they do not exist exclusively by themselves. On the one hand, divine law is derived from eternal law which is law that matches the mind of God as perceived by him and being an eternal being, it is eternal in itself[ CITATION Sai15 \l 1033 ]. That being said, divine law takes from this and it is split into the old and new law. Old law directs conduct externally by capitalizing on human’s capacity for fear to attain social peace and other related benefits. However, new law directed conduct internally by appealing to them with the promises of heaven which stands as a testament of divine love. On the other hand, human law is derived from natural law which asserts that moral standards that direct behavior are objectively resultant from the nature of man and of the world to some degree[ CITATION Sai15 \l 1033 ].
