Oberhaus 2 To understand immigration to the United States, you must look at the laws and policies of the United States that affected immigration positively or negatively and you must analyze all the factors that lead to international migration. Immigration affects and is affected by all components of society. Immigrants leave their home country for a reason and go to another country for a reason. To understand international immigration, you must consider all aspects of society. The economy, political nature, social ways, and treatment of certain religions, races, ethnicities, and genders of both the home country and the host country are just the surface of the components that affect and are affected by immigration patterns. There are many theories about immigration and why and how it occurs. The theories focus on different components such as religion, economics, gender, and race. Theories about immigration also look at different levels of immigration from global immigration to an individual level. A comparison of time periods within immigration patterns is also helpful when trying to understand immigration because you can see the differences in the aspects of society that facilitate or hinder immigration flows. My 5 th great-grandfather, Konrad Pflaumer immigrated to the United States in 1841 with his parents Jakob Freidrich Pflaumer and Katharine Friedrike Riedle from Germany to Ohio. To understand my ancestors’ immigration to the United States, I will do three things in this essay. First, I will investigate the factors in Germany, like religion and the economy, that caused them to immigrate. During my investigation of these factors I will be exploring different migration theories to explain how these societal factors and immigration policies affected my ancestor’s migration experience. Then I will relate their respective reasons for immigrating from Germany to what was going on in the United States from the perspective of government policies and from the perspective of the economy and religious aspects. Lastly, I will be exploring how American

Oberhaus 3 laws and policies facilitated or hindered my ancestors’ immigration and how immigrating during a different time period would have changed their experience. First, I will focus on the religious reason why my ancestors decided to emigrate from Germany. My ancestors came to the United States to practice their religion without persecution from the forced merging of the protestant religions in Germany. In the late 1830’s and early 1840’s, Prussia was trying to force the unification of Lutheran and reformed churches (German Immigration). Starting in 1838 there was a migration from Germany to the United States of confessional Lutherans; these migrants would go on to found the Missouri Synod Lutheran church in the United States (Revolvy). This migration was called the Saxon Lutheran immigration (Revolvy). My ancestors came over as a family during this time period, 1841, and
