Oberhaus 2 Most people would agree that Obama’s policy regarding Syria was ineffective. However, Obama’s responses to events that took place in Syria were reasonable and the best option. The situation itself is “another unfixable” Middle East situation as Obama himself put it 1 . Obama’s actions regarding Syria show that he had a plan that used strategy and allowed the US to intervene in Syria but not to get involved in a war that would not substantially affect the situation and would result in more lives lost by American soldiers. This paper will support the argument that Obama’s actions were the only logical ones in the given circumstances. First the Syrian civil war will be briefly explained. Then the United States’ response to Russian involvement in Syria and Obama’s actions regarding the ‘red line’ on chemical weapons use in Syria will be analyzed. Throughout these analyses, support will be given for the argument stated above. First, some background on the Syrian civil war and its significance. Bashar al-Assad is the president of Syria and was passed down the role from his father in 2000 2 . The al-Assad regime is not popular however. They rule with authoritarian dictatorship and in 2011, pro- democracy protest erupted throughout Syria 3 . Due to the mass outbreak of protests against al- Assad several heads of states throughout the world including Barack Obama called for his resignation 3 . As the protests went on, the United States, the European Union, and the Arab League introduced sanctions against senior members of the al-Assad regime 3 . This is where the US first became involved. The allies of the Assad regime, Russia and China took to the UN council to veto a UN resolution against the Assad regime 3 . This is what made the Syrian Civil War significant worldwide. The US and Russia are again on opposing sides and this threatens international security with the events from the Syrian civil war leading to intervention from both 1 Kasadha Timothy Kamya, Obama's Presidency: The 44th Chief of United States of America (Pronoun, 2017), ch. 5, 2 The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica, Syrian Civil War (Encyclopædia Britannica, inc., 2017), Introduction, 3 The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica, Syrian Civil War (Encyclopædia Britannica, inc., 2017), Uprising,
