2 RIDESHARING OF THE FUTURE Ridesharing of the Future and the Opportunity for Technological Improvements The automotive industry has evolved drastically over the years, making way for a new generation of travel, that being, ridesharing. One company that has set itself apart from the rest is Uber, and through innovative new technology, they have become one of the most prominent ridesharing companies of today. Although they may sit atop their domain, there is still the opportunity for improvement in the ever-changing world of technology. As Uber is a technologically based service, there is always new and improved technologically that can potentially lead the way to an innovative new idea. Because of the deteriorating environment due to harmful emissions from vehicles and rules and regulations put in place by the EPA, Uber has the opportunity to expand their already successful company to include eco-friendly vehicles. Historical Significance The technology industry has continued to grow over the years, and has found its way into various aspects of our everyday lives. One area specifically that has greatly benefitted from the use of mobile technology is the market domain of ridesharing. Over the years the automotive industry has evolved dramatically, making way for this ridesharing industry. Industry’s History The idea of hiring a driver has been around since the horse and carriage concept, called “hackneys” (Bolton, 2015). Ridesharing, like the taxi industry, can be dated back to World War II, where the government mandated that people plan arrangements to share rides when travelling to the workplace so that they could save on rubber during the war. The oil crisis in the 1970’s also contributed to the encouragement to share rides (Hahn & Metcalfe, 2017). Since the development of technology, specifically GPS, ridesharing has become more prominent and easier

Simply by using a smart phone, a person can call for a car at a specific time and place, track their route, and make a payment with the touch of a few buttons. A company called Sidecar was the beginning of the creation of mobile technology and apps for the purpose of ridesharing (Ridester, 2017). Sidecar was the first company to use mobile technology where a person could order a car to pick them up at a moment’s notice. Ultimately, Sidecar ended operations in 2015 due to competition from upcoming ridesharing companies such as Uber (Van Grove, Lien, 2016). The technological advances happened too fast for them to keep up with the changing landscape of the ridesharing business. Since then, Sidecar has tried to reestablish itself in the world of ridesharing by adopting a more technologically based platform like Uber and Lyft. One of the main factors that has contributed to the obsolescence of Sidecar is the development of new and improved technology. Uber makes is easy for a person to use their
