History of Fine Arts Building and Art Museum Plans to build a new art building to contain and expand the school’s art collection started in 1931 after the Art Students” League came together in 1892. This group of women had success and soon formed another association of Muncie Art in 1905. This new group had a new objective, to purchase a new piece for their collection each year to start a permanent collection. The Fine Arts Building officially opened in 1935 to house their collection.The gallery’s name later changed to Ball State University Museum of Art in 1991. It soon started to expand the with an $8.5 million project which added over 5,000 square feet and doubled the number of works being displayed. The gallery was renamed to how we know it today, the David Owsley Museum of Art in 2011, to honor to commemorate Owsley’s plentiful gifts to the museum.
