Organizational Behaviour (OB) is the field of study devoted to understanding, explaining, and ultimately improving the attitudes and behaviours of individuals and groups in organizations Characteristics of the Field ► OB is multidisciplinary in nature ► OB focuses on three levels of analysis: individuals, groups, and organizations ► OB applies the scientific method to practical managerial problems ► OB seeks to improve organizational effectiveness and the quality of life at work F i g u r e The Scientific Method Scientific Studies, Cont’ d ► Correlation (r) Describes the statistical relationship between two variables Can be positive or negative and range from 0 (no statistical relationship) to ± 1 (a perfect statistical relationship) Direction of Causality Moderators and Mediators ► Moderating variable: a variable that changes (increases or decreases) the otherwise established effect of the independent variable upon the dependent variable. ► Mediating variable: A variable that explains a relation between variables or provides a causal link between them. Research Methods in OB Research Method Description Comments Survey Research Questionnaires are developed and administered to people to measure how they feel about various aspects of themselves, their jobs, and their organizations. This technique is the most popular one used in the field of OB Behavior is carefully studied in a controlled setting (a lab) or in an actual company (the field) -to see how a particular variable that is systematically varied affects other aspects of behavior This technique makes it possible to learn about cause-effect relationships Naturalistic Observation A technique in which a scientist systematically records various events and behaviors observed in a work setting This technique is subject to the biases of the observer Case Study A thorough description of a series of events that occurred in a particular organization Findings may not be generalizable to other organizations Experimental Research Integrative Model of OB Next Class Readings Class 2: ► Behavioural Outcomes Colquitt et al.
