Operating systems practical task Investigate the main features of the common types of operating system Mac OS Information about: 1- Core function (kernel) XNU (X is Not Unix) is the computer operating system kernel developed at Apple Inc. since December 1996 for use in the macOS operating system and released as free and open-source software as part of the Darwin operating system Kernel design includes 1. Mach - a heavily modified (hybrid ) OSFMK 7.3 kernel 2. BSD – Berkeley Software Distribution as a part of the kernel provides the POSIX ( Portable Operating System Interface ) application programming interface 3. K32/K64 (XNU versions) – starting from Mac OS X Snow Leopard , v10.6, OS comes in two varieties, a 32-bit version called K32 and a 64-bit version called K64 . 4. I/O Kit - device driver framework, written in a subset of C++ which allows for hot-pluggable devices and automatic, dynamic device configuration. 2- Security S ystem security User permission model: controlling permissions at many levels Mandatory access controls: policies that set security restrictions created by the developer, which can’t be overridden System Integrity Protection: h restricts components to read-only in specific critical file system locations to prevent malicious code from executing or modifying them.
