NURSING CARE 2 Nursing Care of the Childbearing Family at Risk Pregnancy This review on nursing care of the childbearing families at risk pregnancy of normal psychosocial and physiological changes that occur during pregnancy is crucial because it provides information to nurses on how to provide quality care to mothers during and after birth. The article reviewed was chosen because it discusses the experience of mothers of babies with neonatal abstinence syndrome. These infants are placed in the neonatal intensive care unit and the mothers closely monitored by experienced nurses for quality care. Summary of the Article The purpose of the study was to describe the experience of mothers whose babies are placed in the neonatal intensive care sector due to neonatal abstinence syndrome. The qualitative study recruited respondents from outpatient, community-based, and addiction treatment institutions in the southwestern urban cities of the United States. The sample had 15 Hispanic substance addicted women with infants suffering from NAS. Data was collected using semi- structured and individual interviews and evaluated the data through qualitative content investigation. The authors argue that substance use during pregnancy led to poor neonatal results since it increases the risk of prematurity, neonatal abstinence syndrome, and low birth weight.
