Using your textbook and knowledge of health care ethics to date, imagine you are the surgeon who left a tool or sponge inside a patient. How would you go about telling the patient or the patient's family about the error? What would you say? Imagine you are aware of a serious medical error a fellow physician made, what should you do? Follow the 6 step decision making guide as you work through this. Is there any technology that could help prevent these errors from occurring? As a physician, it is your job to take accountability for what you did wrong and try to make it right. A medical error like that is very serious and it is something that not many patients or their families would forgive, but you at least owe them the truth. If it were me in that position, I would sit the family down in a private room and briefly explain what happened and what may have led to the error.
