solo). The setting was very intimate and I’ve heard that Linda Cole invites fellow jazz musicians of all sorts to sit in and play. To tie aspects from our class into the experience, I could observe that this setting of jazz music was very closely related to the brief material we covered on “City Blues”, if not totally. Although much of the music we heard was performed and composed in the 30’s through 40’s, remnants of its predecessor style remained. For instance, the lyric material was almost exclusively pertaining to love and the glamour of love in the city. The instrumentation was fairly close to what Bessie Smith would have been performing to, as well. There was not a semblance of any country grit or musings of rural life. The performers, beside Mrs. Cole, were all of college or graduate age. They all held a masters in a Jazz related field, be it composition or performance, and a couple were educators as well. The pianist, whose name was Arin, was also classically trained and performs with a local symphony.
