CNS Brain – contained in the Cranial Cavity (cranial vault) The CPU of the human body Structures: • Brain stem – connects spinal cord to the brain; responsible for Integration of survival reflexes Midbrain Pons (bridge) Medulla oblongata • Cerebellum – “little brain” Locomotion Balance Posture • Diencephalon – “2-brains” or secondary brain Thalamus = “chamber”; not a ventricle, however. Termination point for certain neuronal chains, such as 3 rd order neurons 1st order (sensory)(afferent) 2nd order "relay" from PNS to CNS (Pons)

Epithalamus – on top of the thalamus (relay between the thalamus and the hypothalamus " Efferent neurons") Hypothalamus – below the thalamus: Master regulator of much of the endocrine system (Also the ANS) Thirst center of the body • Regulation of fluid and electrolyte balance Water Ions Na+, K+, Ca2+, PO4-3, H+ pH balance Osmoregulation Blood volume and pressure Temperature regulation – the thermostat” of the human body. Cerebrum – conscious thought and control of most of the body Right and left hemispheres Corpus callosum connects the two hemispheres Ventricles in left and right hemispheres

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
