■2011 update ●Split into two sovereign states ●South Sudan separated ○Sudan and South Sudan ○South sudan one of the poorest states●Can we have a nation w/out a state?○Yes ○Many are not sovereign states■No political arena they rule themselves in ○Example:■Kurds (turkey, syria, northern iraq, iran)■Palestine (palestinians wanting to form sovereign state)■Kosovo (trying to being a sovereign state)○Why won’t they let these territories go?■Sovereign states never willingly give up territory ●Without a tremendous fight or a whole lotta money○Never know what the strategic value may be worth■Examples:●Russia sold alaska territory to U.S. for a whole lotta money●Louisiana purchase sold to U.S.
