Enilse Ramirez Bus 329 09/13/2018 Nestle- The Infant Formula Incident Summary For over ten years, Nestle has been accused of selling infant feeding formula which has allegedly caused mass deaths of babies in the Third World. The charges made against infant formulas was whether advertising and marketing of these products have discouraged breast feeding among Third World mothers and have led to the misuse of the products. The charges are said to lead to infant malnutrition and death. Nestle responded by stating that all of its products carry a statement that breastfeeding is best. They also believe infant formula is vital in proper infant nutrition because it can serve as a supplement, when needed in addition to breast milk, and a substitute, when mothers are unable to feed their child. In 1974, Nestle reviewed its marketing practices on a region-by-region basis. This resulted in the phasing out of mass media advertising of infant formula in certain markets and, by 1978, was banned worldwide by the company.
