Communication that is trusted and open should occurs between a healthcare provider and patient, to accomplish development of a relationship and information for appropriate assessment. The ability to acquire information that could be used to guide diagnosis and treatment can be aided by using techniques to obtain an accurate health history. Barriers could present with a provider is seeking to obtain such a history, one being culture. Culture may influence the reluctancy to openly communicate without concern, even if provided a safe, private setting. Cultural competency in a health care provider is being competent in recognizing the individual’s values and adapting to provide patient-centered communication, leading to a trusting relationship between the provider and patient (Ball, J. W. et al , 2019).
