oCortes oMontezuma oCuauhtemoc Spanish & Aztec Empire collide (1519) oSimilar in structure §Both ruled by king, theocratic, drive to expand and conquer oAztecs §ruthless, harsh in how they governed BUT did not change the ruling elites (they would not kill the ruling emperor of conquered city states) §Conquered not to kill but to capture & bring to Tenochtitlan §The captured would be sacrificed oSpaniards §Horrified by the treatment imposed by the Aztecs §Set up their own bureaucracy to rule (much more costly) Hernan Cortes oCame from a middle-class family (short, sight and had never commanded men in battle oConvinced the King of Spain to send him on an exploration of the mainland although many had gone before him, none had ever stayed §WHY? – to get an idea of the riches & religions oGovernor of Cuba began feeling threatened by Cortes since he was acting independent, Governor decides to halt Cortes’ exploration oCortes decides to set sail to MX anyways oReading de-emphasized the role of religion (most conquistadors went on the mission to get rich) oWithin a day, a representative of the Aztec empire meets Cortes (plus 4,000 troops), peaceful meeting, gifts given to Cortes, tells Cortes that the emperor requests Cortes and his people to move out of their land oCortes allies with nearby emperor of conquered city (hated Aztecs, Spaniards offered the ability to remove Aztecs from power) oCortes’ men feel as though they need to retreat, Cortes arrests the leaders, hangs some, mutilates others, sinks all 11 ships (WEST OR WE DIE HERE) oBegin long journey to Tenochtitlan Cortes makes decision to kidnap Moctezuma o
