Yet still to thisday, society has yet to come up with a competent answer. In the past, the solution was pertainingto the old ideas of how she needed to cook, clean, get married ASAP, and then spend her life tending to her man and the kids. The old definition of a woman was weakness and being objectified. Nonetheless, this old idea of women is still present in today’s society, in the form of discriminating societal ideas and norms. New age women, such as Barbara Kingsolver, fight to undercut this injustice in the world and spread her ideas of what direction society needs to go in order to change these sexist societal norms. The Bean Trees is a novel that explores the everyday life of present day women in Arizona. The main characters endure through their unconventional lives with the help of family and friends. They face a lot of challenges; nonetheless, their friendship continuously grows them as they endure the struggles of daily life. Kingsolver uses fiction to help push a theme that women are strong people, and enforces that women are not restricted by oppressing societal norms that require their independence and freedom to be relinquished. Kingsolver uses characterization to show how strong women actually are, despite what society has painted them as for so many years. The first way that she develops this theme is by how she portrays the main character, Taylor Greer. The story portrays her as a strong woman who is also independent and fierce.
