The Emancipation Proclamation only abolished slavery in the South and did not have a direct effect until after the Civil War, and the 13th Amendment only prohibited slavery unless a crime was committed. This loophole was abused and many black men were found guilty of crimes they did not commit and sentenced to do labor work. The conditions did not change sincethe past and many died performing the labor. It also talks of the corruption within the peonage system and sharecroppers. The film brings in narrative of descendants of some victims, as well as someone who's family profited off this system.Questions:1.
