Crossing the Border and Health In response to the movie ‘Desierto’, concerning border crossing and health you see at the beginning of the movie that migrants have no clear understanding of what crossing the border would be like. Why do migrants try to get to the United States illegally when the same amount of money they give to traffickers could be used to legally acquire residency in the U.S.? That is, because of Immigration laws, the United States only allows a limited number of immigrants to come over. Continuing in the movie, the traffickers, also referred to as coyotes, and the migrants come across an issue of the transport vehicle breaking down. This forces the coyotes and migrants to proceed on foot taking a longer and more dangerous path towards successfully crossing the border. During this alternative route some of the migrants experience fatigue and shortness of breath due to the heat. In reference to the movie, in an article titled ‘Undocumentedness and Liminality as Health Variables’ a young Zapotec woman named Flor stated, “They (coyotes or border smugglers) took us through the hills, running through the hills.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
