Number of degrees of freedom The number of degrees of freedom is the number of independent variables. This is the largest number of thermodynamic variables (such as pres- sure or temperature) that can be varied without affecting each other . This number is given by the Phase Rule: f = c - p + 2 c – the number of chemical components p – the number of phases present Example: liquid water; 0.1 M aqueous solution of NaCl.

Important definitions - Thermodynamic State Thermodynamic State - means the macroscopic equilibrium condition of a system, defined by specifying the minimum number of variables, f , as determined by the Phase Rule.
