Defining Species Many concepted proposed to define a species, but ultimately a fundamental taxonomic unit All living organisms have a certain species classification Cladogenesis ­ new species arise and the new and parental species may coexist Speciation ­ divergence of one group from an existing group to form a new species Three main concepts to define species Biological species concept ­ a group of individuals who interbreed or have the potential to interbreed Similar to definition of a population According to this, when individuals of a population become too different, they lose the ability to interbreed, thus creating a new species Not useful for defining those who do not undergo sexual reproduction Not useful in defining groups that are extinct Not useful in defining groups of bacteria that undergo conjugation Conjugation ­ exchange of small amount of genetic information
