Crash Forces and Avoidable Harm All types of vehicle collisions are uniquely destructive. The most common type of mishaps usually involve rear-end collisions and collisions with stationary objects such as poles and walls. Catastrophic cases involve high-speed collisions which can be head-on, and often have fatal outcomes. Vehicle collisions involve a series of processes that occur in successive order within a very short space of time, usually within a second. The events are usually very abrupt, and to understand them one also has to thoroughly understand the concept of momentum. Such knowledge, including the deformation process on a vehicle during a collision, can help one can avoid harm in any eventuality. All moving bodies have momentum, which tends to remain the same unless they are acted upon by an external force. The rate at which momentum changes equals the net force acting on it.
