Introduction to Alcohol and Drug Use Although roughly 6 million vehicle crashes happen each year in the United States, only about 3% are fatal. The total number of fatal motor vehicle crashes in 2017 exceeded 34,000, averaging roughly 100 crashes each day. About 30% of these deadly crashes were due to impaired driving because of alcohol/drug use. In Arizona, the number of fatal motor vehicle crashes due to impaired driving because of alcohol use was 218 in 2017. Driving under the influence of a substance like alcohol is so dangerous because alcohol reduces the brain function and impairs thinking, muscle coordination, and reasoning. When the alcohol level in a person’s system increases, its adverse effects on the central nervous system likewise increase. The critical results usually include general relaxation, the loss of judgment, altered mood, and poor muscle coordination (i.e., balance, vision, hearing, and increased reaction times).
