Assessment Task 1 BSBSUS501 Develop workplace policy and procedures for sustainability BSBSUS501 Develop workplace policy and procedures for sustainability Assessment Task 1 Three policy option summaries 1. Replacing wall mounted radiators with effectiveness heater Using a wall heater to heat a single room can be a money saving alternative to turning on central heating. They're great for bathrooms and entryways and provide zonal heat for rooms use the most. Electric wall heaters require a dedicated circuit, and run on either 120 or 240 volts, with several wattage options. How large of an area heater will cover depends on the wattage. Generally, 1,000 watts = 100 square feet of heat. 2. Replacing old wood heater with new wood heater When it comes to combustion, a modern wood stove cannot be compared with an old open fireplace or older stoves. Newer stoves have technology that ensures complete combustion, gives excellent heating economy and environmentally friendly firing. If the wood burning stove is fired correctly, the heat that is produced is carbon dioxide neutral and does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. Complete combustion just produces carbon dioxide, water vapour and ash. The ash is fine and grey and is ideal for use as a fertiliser in the garden. An added bonus is that using wood as fuel is both renewable and locally sourced. 3. Decrease resource use Improvement systems and waste reduction activities that are applied throughout whole business can deliver huge energy and resource savings. A strategic commitment to implementing ‘lean’ can provide a systematic approach to continuous improvement and can help to find hidden wastes across the whole business. Resource waste might be hidden in processes or product features that do not create value for the customer. It might result from equipment that is running but waiting for input or excess inventory that generates significant transport and storage costs before it is converted to sales income. © 2015 Innovation and Business Industry Skills Council Ltd. / modified 2018 January 1 st edition version: 1 Page 1 of 12
