Social Problem, Cause of the Problem (Conservative and Liberal Viewpoints) When looking at the cause of poverty in America, conservative and liberal opinions differ. Conservatives believe that the person creates their own poverty by choosing their environment. Environmental issues such as drug addiction, not seeking higher education, no effort into becoming gainfully employed, continuation of dependence on social programs to help sustain cause them to be stuck in the cycle of poverty. Conservatives have the notion that, “all social welfare policies are compromises with the need for self-reliance and independence, which are hallmarks of the American character “[CITATION Jim15 \p 18 \l 1033 ] . Conservatives put the responsibility of ending poverty on the person, not the government. Liberals have the view that the environment is not a choice and causes poverty, reasons include the lack of treatment and prevention of drug addiction, unrealistic
