Samantha Perry Midterm -Rel 101 Greer 19Z1 March 8, 2016 Question #1—Identify the seven standard sacraments of the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches and give the significance of each. Then, compare and contrast the Protestant (churches like the Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist, for examples) use of the sacraments, noting the distinctions. Additionally, comment on why you think that the churches like the Mennonites, the Quakers and the Baptists hold the position that they do relative to the sacraments. The seven sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church are Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony . Baptism is the induction into the body of Christ (church) and gives grace for the forgiveness of sins. Confirmation gives the power and grace to witness for Christ, Eucharist is the receiving and outward show that Christ is received and forgiveness of “lesser” sins and is conducted in their mass. Confession reconciles you with the Church and returns you to grace, Anointing of the sick is given to the seriously ill and once received unites them with Christ’s passion. Marriage is an unbreakable bond given to live a married life and Holy Orders are given to those that act in the person of Christ. When comparing and contrasting the use of sacraments in the protestant churches we see that baptism and communion are generally the only ones used yet, there are distinctions that make each denomination unique. While all of these practice the sacrament of Baptism, Presbyterians think if it as equal to preaching and communion accepting all three as equal, Anglicans consider Baptism as a free gift of God and that Baptism is to be given to all including infants and Methodists also hold to the same belief yet, will accept the Baptism of other denominations because they believe that it is a sign of unity and not divisiveness. The Eucharist also represents the same ideal throughout these three but Anglicans believe that the presence of Christ is within the bread and wine, while the Presbyterians do not. Methodists are in the fence with this notion because the traditional belief is that Christ is not present in the wine and bread but recent times has seen a shift to the traditional belief of Catholics that Christ is within the wine and bread. I think that these religions hold to the position they do, about the sacraments, because it is what makes them distinct as a religion. When the churches began to split they were seeking to separate themselves from each other and picking and choosing what sacraments fit into their beliefs was a way to distinguish themselves from other religions. Question #2—Review the context of the Great Schism of 1054. Name the major people involved and the detailed circumstances. Then, give the significance on the doctrine (the Peace of Augsburg) of 1555, stated as “cuius regio, eius religio”- “whose region, his religion” and how this thinking seemed to play out in the establishment of Henry VIII as
