CH 204: Inorganic Chemistry Topic 3: Tutorial Questions 1. In group 14, carbon and silicon form covalent compounds with +4 oxidation states like CH 4 or SiH 4 respectively while Sn and Pb show +2 and +4 oxidation states. Explain. In the heavier p-block elements, like Group IIIA to VIA a pair of valence electrons in ns 2 is not lost or does not take part in the reaction/bond formation due to their extra stability. This inertness of a pair of ns 2 valence electrons in the behaviour p-block elements is called the Inert Pair Effect. The lighter elements of group 14 elements (C, Si, Ge, etc) show only +4 oxidation state and thus form compounds like CH 4 or SiH 4 , but heavier elements Sn and Pb show inert pair effect. Thus due to the inert pair effect, Sn and Pb show +2 and +4 oxidation states where +2 oxidation states are more stable. Please note that we have not covered Inert Pair Effect. If you wish you can explain it to them or skip it telling them that it will be covered later.
