Rubin Aval RE Essay Is The Use of Animals In Medical Research Wrong? The use of animals in medical research has been ongoing since Ancient Greece by people such as Aristotle and Erasistratus who performed experiments on living animals but it was not until after the use of animals in medical research was highly increased in the 19 th century when in 1874, Parliament passed the Cruelty to Animals Act which was aimed at regulating animal experiments that, that people starting questioning whether the use of animals in experiments in okay or not. Utilitarianism a belief created by a man named Jeremy Bentham who came up with the idea of the principle of utility; create the most amount of happiness for the most amounts of people. A Utilitarian would say that animal testing is justifiable due to it causing more good than bad as more human lives are saved than animal lives that are killed or harmed. Another reason for animal testing is how, by law, drugs must be tested on at least two different species of animals in the UK. Therefore, if animal testing did not undergo, then no new drugs could be made, therefore resulting in no advancement in medical research. The average life expectancy of humans has drastically improved due to experiments being carried out on animals and many would say that human life is more important than animal life is. This view was brought up by a man named Carl Cohen who is a speciesist. He believes that, since humans are at the top of the food chain, we should be able to do whatever we wish to other animals as we worked to get to the top of the food chain. Speciesism is giving preference to your own species over another, in the absence of morally relevant differences. Almost every religion also believes that animal testing is okay
