M ONEY AND B ANKING C ASE S TUDY : A NALYZING A NNUAL R EPORTS OF T WO C ANADIAN B ANKS To Determine Career and Investment Opportunities Your success with the assignment is contingent upon your ability to conduct research into two of the major Canadian banks, arrive at some important conclusions about them, and determine how you can use that information to your advantage. While this assignment is worth 10 % of the total grade for the course, its true value lies in what it can do to assist you in launching a career with a bank or other major financial institution. Overview Within this course, and through this assignment, you will acquire significant knowledge as you discover the importance of understanding how banks make their money, how an awareness of their financial ratios can identify strengths and weaknesses of banks, and other important information that is contained in the annual report. All of this will take place without your being a professional financial analyst or advisor (yet). With the knowledge that you will accumulate in doing this assignment you will, amongst other things, be better equipped to answer a number of important questions, including: If I had to choose between two major Canadian banks for a career opportunity, which of those two would I choose? and If I had to choose between two major Canadian banks for an investment opportunity, which of the two would I choose? Resources That You Will Need You will need to visit the web sites of the two major Canadian banks, whose names you will be choosing at random, to access their 2016 annual reports. Once you visit their websites, go to the section entitled “Investor Relations”, which will either be accessed by clicking onto its own heading / icon or under a heading such as “About Us”. Save those links, perhaps in your “Favorites” in your browser, so you can easily retrieve the sites when you need to go back to them later to download and / or print-off certain pages from their annual report (but DO NOT print the whole annual report because it can include as many as 190+ pages of information, the vast majority of which you will NOT need for this assignment). 1 School of Business © 2016, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology

M ONEY AND B ANKING Background The primary purpose of an annual report is to act as a communication tool , to enable senior management of a company to communicate with the owners of the company ( shareholders ) and explain to those shareholders what the company did, how well it did (and, perhaps, did not do) in terms of its financial results compared to its plans. The annual report also serves to provide some guidance as to where management expects the company to go during the next year. The annual report also functions as a promotional tool , to explain to stakeholders about the actions of the company. Stakeholders are people and organizations who have some level of interest, or reliance, on the company to satisfy some need the stakeholder has. That need for information may, or may not, involve an interest in the financial results of that bank.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
