Stratification – comes from geology, strata = layers - when you dig into society, you get layers Social Differentiation - Durkheim – in mechanical solidarity, everyone is more or less the same o woman look after kids o men work - male + female - young, middle + old people - Asians, Caucasians, etc. - not all differences are seen as socially significant o society may not pick out certain social differences even though it is physically there ex. innie or outie = society doesn’t care o in Egypt skin colour was not socially significant o in our society, especially America skin colour is socially significant What is Stratification? - an ordered ranking of strata in the form of a hierarchy that endures over time (over generations) o dealing with social structure - important in the social organization of society - social stratification is the division of large numbers of ppl into layers according to their relative power, property, and prestige - ex. the Catholic church has social inequality, but does not have social stratification o social inequality = pope, bishops, priest o doesn’t have stratification b/c priest are prohibited from sexual activity therefore does not endures over generation Criteria for Placement 1. Objective Criteria – Marx (economically oriented) o one’s position in the social organization of production o you were either an owner of the instruments or a worker o education, income, wealth, occupation exists outside of us shapes us
