Frank’s Essay Throughout all of history, African Americans were always being repressed. In the mid 1800’s because of the 13th Amendment slavery was outlawed making all African Americans free. They still though were treated as less than human by most of the nation, and were not given the same treatment that white citizens got. This prejudice led some ex-slaves and other educated African Americans to demand more and better rights for their people, and an end to white supremacy. Although they were both advocating for the cause of African American Civil Rights, leaders from the 1890’s differed in ideas and methods than the leaders of the 1960’s. In the late 19th century, early movements by African Americans started emerging. One famous leader, Booker T. Washington was an ex-slave,who knew how the people of the South thought, and knew that they were not going to accept African Americans as their equals outright. His plan was to teach vocational skills tp African American citizens, so they could become self sufficient. These ideas were reflected in some ways by a leader in the 1960’s Malcolm X. He
