Notes: 9-20-07 Developmental comedy Whole skit becomes an entire joke, all jokes within it are connected instead of the individual, chopy, quick jokes of formless comedy No ethnic or cultural comments “straightman and stodge routine” –big guy = straight man and smaller guy = stodge , stodge gets all the laughs – example shown “who’s on first” skit by Abbot and Castello Scripted and structered, must be practiced and performed accordingly, timing is very important Has an exposition Verbal cicumlocation- Illogical logic- gives audience crazy premess with logical plot following as long as you buy into the beginning (like suspension of disbelief) Malapropism- confuss meaning of words with words that sound similar (stodge then sounds unintelligent) Non-sequitur- ‘not in sequence’ line that doesn’t logically follow the one in fron of it Everything builds to a pyramid shape: exaggeration, escalation, elaboration . . gets faster and faster as it developes complexity until the ‘topper’ ( like a climax, joke
