Last Time The meaning of affirmative action has changed over time Its current meaning is controversial because it helps one group at the expense of another and it stigmatizes minorities In deciding the extent to which affirmative action is constitutional, court decisions have varied. Economic Sectors Primary Sector: production of raw materials (farming, fishing, mining, etc) Secondary Sector: manufacturing that transforms raw materials into usable goods (construction, clothing, etc.) Tertiary Sector: production and distribution of services (medical, legal, educational, clerical, cleaning, etc.) Industrial Restructuring 1940’s-50’s Focus on secondary sector (manufacturing) 1960’s-70’s Manufacturing decreased Importation became more profitable Some manufacturing moved to other countries Service jobs increased Polarization increased Since 1970’s Focus on tertiary sector (services) Knowledge is necessary Spatial Mismatch
