Shamarah Lorince Soc 151 Professor Orak 30 June 2019 Family and Mental Health One of the main social institutions discussed throughout this course is family. I found this institution the most important and interesting because family is the first social institution that most of us encounter. This institution has a great deal of impact throughout our lives and shape us into who we are. Usually when the word family comes up, we are supposed to think about positivity due to the way that role expectations, values, norms are portrayed. Although they are depicted this way, family can have an effect on health status which includes mental health and illness. Due to the broadness of this topic, I will solely be discussing the nature of relations between men and women and parents with kids. Family Status, Roles, Values Family is a group of people related to one another by marriage, blood ties, or adoption. As a family, the institutionalized status is a mother, father, daughter, and son. One of the Role expectations of a family is that wives and husbands must be loyal to one another, whether it’s emotionally or sexually. Another one is that parents should protect, teach, and nourish their children. Children must comply to their parents rules, go to school, and do their chores. The social values and norms of the family institution is that family relations are stronger and mostly important than the ones outside of the blood line. This belief of social value drives us to the norm that family members should help one another. Children should be treated fairly and they should
