Kao 1 Beverly Kao Professor Teng INTD 100 CRN 91987 26/9/19 Christianity in “Crime and Punishment” Christianity has been an important part of the Russian literary heritage since the days of the Eastern Roman Empire, when the majority of literature was written in accordance to a code set by the Russian Orthodox Church. Religious themes dominated the majority of Russian literature and the works of secular authors were censored for any possible criticism against the state religion. Literature had to be exclusively Christian in form and content in order to promote the religion with the zeal of the Apostle Andrew, who was traditionally said to have founded the Church. However, during the reign of Tsar Peter Alexeyevich the Great, Russia underwent a massive modernization in order to be on equal footing with Western Europe; as a result, many abandoned their faith for science and reason, and split the nations into two factions: the educated, Westernized elite and the peasant believers (Pattison). However, with the turn of the early nineteenth century, Russian authors were hit with a nationalistic streak as they experimented with different styles of literature like Neoclassicism and Romanticism in order to find what set Russia apart from all the other countries; Alexander Pushkin, the founder of modern Russian literature, provided the answer: Orthodoxy. Since the nation was still torn between faith and scientific reason, Pushkin’s answer created an uproar and the number of religious Russian authors dwindled until it became a minority (Pattison).
