COMPOSITION AND CHARACTERISTICS The study of soil is called pedology. Soil is composed of organic and inorganic matter. Here are some of the characteristics of soil; unconsolidated mineral and organic matter mixed with liquids and gasses Occurs naturally on the earth's surface and is a medium capable of supporting growth of rooted plants. Mineral Particles They are the largest ingredients and make up approximately 45% of soil structure. The original rock that got broken down by weathering action and erosion to form the basis of soil. The parent breaks down which produces minerals such as calcium phosphorus and potassium. The parent rock influences soil color, depth, and texture and ph. value of the soil. Organic Matter This is decayed vegetation broken down by microorganisms in soil to form humus which is the dark substance that binds soil improving its texture. It increases the soil ability to retain moisture. These conditions allow microorganisms to thrive.
