Ivy Jin Surface Area to Volume Ratio Lab Problem : What is the effect of size (surface area to volume ratio) on the time it takes for material to diffuse in (and out) of the cell? Variables : Manipulated variable - size of agar cubes Responding Variable - time taken for agar cubes to lose colour Controlled variable - material of cubes, amount of acid, type of acid Hypothesis : If the cube is larger in size, then the amount of time required for it to lose colour would be longer, because when the cube is larger, it means that there is more material inside the cube that needs to be diffused. Materials : Agar Tweezers Beaker Scalpels Rulers Stopwatch HCI (aq) Procedures : 1. Carefully cut 5 agar cubes (2mm, 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm) 2. Place agar cubes into small beaker 3. Gently add HCI, just until all cubes are covered by the acid, begin timing as soon as acid is added 4. Record the time it takes for each cube to turn colourless Time needed for HCI to fully diffuse through different sizes of agar cubes Size of Cube Time to Fully Diffuse Surface Area Volume SA:Vol 2mm 40.62s 24mm² 8mm ³ 3mm ¹ 4mm 2:09.31s 96mm² 64mm ³ 1.5mm ¹ 6mm 6:19.25s 216mm² 216mm ³ 1mm ¹ 8mm 9:38.30s

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
