Justin Ickes ISS 225 Section 005 10/16/2007 Refugee Development Center I began my service learning project at the Refugee Development Center (RDC) in September of the fall semester in 2007, and during the time I’ve been there I couldn’t have been happier. My tasks are simple, but can vary from day to day. When I arrive on Tuesday mornings I begin by getting the learning room prepared (i.e. turning the computers on, getting the room straightened up, if necessary, and getting situated). As the day progresses I help many adults and college students who live in the local area with every day jobs and homework that they need assistance with. Some people may hear the term refugee and automatically think that they are specifically poor foreign people, this is not always true. According to Wikipedia, “a refugee is a person whoowing to a well- founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of their nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail him/herself of the protection of that country” ( ). I have met a multitude of people from various countries around the globe, with different cultures and backgrounds who have come to America in pursuit of different needs. They all have different standings in the American stratification system, and concluding that they are all poor is incorrect.
