Nguyen 1 Christopher Nguyen English 100 Professor Price 24 October 2017 Rhetorical Analysis The article “Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here?” was written by Mark Edmundson. This text was published in a magazine that features writers from essays about the American South. Edmundson wrote this text to inform students that they should think about what they want out of their college experience. He argues that students will face many challenges. He wrote this to explain what an ideal college experience can and should be. Edmundson effectively achieve his purpose by using mostly pathos through emotional and inspiring appeal. Edmundson got the idea of writing this from his experience of preparing to enter college. In this text, he explained what his father told him to do when picking something to major in, why students should live their life and not others, and many challenges they will face in life. He was in the kitchen with his father talking about his future and his plans for it. He told his father he was going for pre-law, even though he knew nothing about it.
