Lesson 8, Ethical Dilemmas1Joseph CowanAC1903336J06V Ethics in Criminal JusticeLesson 8, Assignment 08August 8, 2019Ethical DilemmasRushworth Kidder was the founder of the Institute for global ethics and he observed thatright verses wrong situations are generally easy to decide upon ethically speaking. Kidderpointed out four issues found within “right versus right” ethical problems: justice versus mercy, short term versus long term, individual versus community and truth versus loyalty(Albanese,2016).Kidder advises that you should assess an ethical dilemma to determine which conflict isthe issue. Nearly all ethical problems include one of these four conflicts; some may include morethan one. Once the nature of the conflict is identified, and information is gathered about theevidence on both sides, then ethical principles can be applied to assess the moral permissibilityof the conduct in question(Albanese, 2016).Being a psychologist employee at the Alabama Department of Corrections, it would bevital to be honest and inform Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program (ADAP) investigators ofmy concerns. The Career aside, “right is right and wrong is wrong”. The prisoners already havethe punishment of years of incarceration; this alone can cause mental instability and need forpsychological treatment. In this situation I would apply Kidder’s four typologies in order toassess the moral permissibility of the actions alleged in the complaint. Fairness and equity inapplying the law sometimes conflict with compassion, empathy, and love(Albanese, 2016).As apsychologist this would apply to my decision to follow the rules of fairness or adjusting the rule
