HISTORY OF OPIUM 2 Part 1: Similarities between the book and the video on the history of opium Both the video and the book highlights the first opium war, 1839 to 1842, fought between the British and the Chinese, China wanted to end the opium traded because one third of the Chinese population was addicted to opium, this opium mainly came from the British colonies in India, a chest cost two dollars to produce and sells for ten dollars, in this case, the opium misery for China became a financial windfall for Britain, therefore the British government was not ready to let go of the large Chinese opium market. China suffered a heavy defeat in the hands of the British military. The two sources also touch on the role hypodermic syringe on the opioid crisis; the syringe gave people the ability to administer active compounds directly into the bloodstream, the syringe helped the users to feel the effects Morphine within seconds, people experienced feelings of ecstasy an intense high. Users could order hypodermic syringe through mail discreetly, and this helped people with opioid problems to conceal their problem. The hypodermic syringes, therefore, set the stage for the first American drug epidemic.
