Contrast the different levels of the hypocrisy of Goodman Brown in Young Goodman Brown and Sammy in A&PHypocrisy has long been used by authors to show different characters in different a light. Hypocrisy is defined as engaging in the same behavior to which one criticizes or talks ill about. Because of its effectiveness, this technique has been used by many writers, including John Updike and Nathaniel Hawthorne in their books A&Pand Young Goodman Brown,respectively. The first book is about a young man Sammy who works at a local grocery store A&P. During oneof the slow days, he notices three girls that walk into the store dressed in bikinis. He gets attracted to one of them, and in his mind, one builds the kind of life that he thinks she lives. Because of this mental picture, he longs to have a life like hers and not his boring life in the store. When the girls come to his booth to pay for what they wanted, his boss and the store manager, Lengel rebukes the girls and tells them to cover up. In an attempt to please the girl, he disagrees with Lengel and decides to quit his job. After he quit, he walks out, and the girls are long gone, and they did not see what he just did. He is now left jobless and acknowledges that hewill have a tough but fulfilling life ahead of him.
